Microneedling

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that uses a device covered with tiny, shallow needles, which causes a ‘micro-injury’ that prompts the skin to stimulate collagen production. It can be used effectively for:

  • Reducing scars caused by acne, surgery or thermal burns
  • Fading stretch marks
  • Reducing fine lines and deep wrinkles
  • Tightening sagging skin
  • Skin pigmentation
  • Plumping up the skin for more youthful appearance

How It Works

This procedure is well-tolerated and takes up to an hour to complete, depending on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem. The microneedling device is equipped with needles measuring between 0.2 and 2.5 mm. It involves pricking the skin with tiny, sterilized needles. The micro-wounds stimulate the body to create more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy. You can microneedle anywhere on the body excluding eyelids. It is important to remember, with microneedling it does have more downtime than most treatments - the skin can be red (sunburnt like) for 1-3 days post treatment.

Pre-Treatment Tips

  • Patients must be off any photosensitizing medications (ex. Accutane) and blood thinners for 6 months - 1 year.
  • Do not use topical agents that may increase the sensitivity of your skin such as retinoids, exfoliants, topical antibiotics or acids 5-7 days prior to your treatment.
  • Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil for at least 3 days prior to your microneedling session. These will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical for your skin rejuvenation.
  • Avoid IPL/Laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure, or sunburn for at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure.
  • No waxing, depilatory creams, or electrolysis to the area being treated for 5-7 days prior.
  • Do not shave the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation. If there’s dense hair present in the treatment area, shave the day before you arrive for your appointment.
  • If you’re prone to cold sores, take an antiviral agent for 2 days prior to and the day of the treatment.

Microneedling Side Effects

In general, microneedling is super safe if done correctly. The most common side effect is skin irritation and redness for a few days afterward. But like all cosmetic treatments, microneedling comes with some risks.

Possible serious side effects include:

  • peeling
  • bruising
  • bleeding
  • infection

Keep in mind that Microneedling isn’t for everyone. Don’t get this treatment if you:

  • scar easily
  • are pregnant
  • have open wounds
  • recently had radiation therapy
  • take blood thinners daily
  • have a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis
  •  have a bleeding disorder like hemophilia or Von Willebrand disease

Frequently Asked Questions

Microneedling involves the use of very fine needles that create tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin. This causes the body to begin stimulating new collagen and elastin, both key elements in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients can also see improvements in overall skin texture. Microneedling for stretch marks and acne scars is a very common practice among patients. A private consultation with one of our experienced staff members will give you a better idea of what microneedling can do for you.

When you come in for your skin rejuvenation appointment at Spa 361 at the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute, you will be led to our comfortable private treatment area to begin your session. After cleansing the skin, our staff uses an advanced microneedling handpiece that passes gently and evenly over the treatment areas. Most patients will receive a 30 minute treatment, based on the condition of the skin and type of treatment received. After microneedling, we use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum to boost your end results and make your skin even more gorgeous. We will also massage a moisturizer with sunscreen into your complexion, since your skin will be more sensitive after the session.

Whether you choose microneedling for acne scars or other skin issues, you will notice that the skin appears bright and red following your session. For this reason, we do not recommend planning any significant events right after your appointment. Downtime varies from person to person, but generally, you may experience mild redness and mild swelling for about 24 hours after your microneedling treatment. We recommend 4 treatments spaced 1 month apart to see visible improvements, as the body requires time to produce new collagen and elastin. Results will continue to improve for a few months as the collagen remodels. Ask your skin care specialist about planning maintenance treatments, scheduled every 4 – 6 weeks for the most optimal results.

Patients typically feel some mild discomfort during their microneedling sessions, but it is not considered painful. Numbing cream or local anesthesia can be requested if you are nervous or anxious about the procedure.

To ensure proper healing, we encourage patients to observe the following instructions for at least 24 hours after treatment. If you have any additional concerns, reach out to a friendly member of our staff in Fort Washington and Lansdale, PA.

Avoid direct sunlight and exposure to harmful UV rays
Do not go swimming or immerse your face in water
Avoid strenuous exercise or any activities that promote sweating
Do not apply make-up or lotions

Patients of any skin type are candidates for treatment as long as you do not have any active infections or lesions. Candidates should be prepared to wait 1 – 2 months after the initial four treatments before seeing results, since it takes time for new collagen and elastin to produce a noticeable difference in your skin. While microneedling treatment is safe and effective, it is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals using certain acne medications.
